The most expensive electric utilities in America
Ranked by what residential customers actually paid per kilowatt-hour in 2025. At the top, Alaska Village Elec Coop, Inc in Alaska charged 65.93¢ — 4.8× the median US utility — for a typical bill of $318.94 a month.
Remote and island systems dominate the top of this list because they burn shipped fuel to make power. Further down it becomes a list of ordinary mainland utilities, which is the part worth reading: those customers pay a premium without a geography that explains it.

Price is residential revenue divided by residential kilowatt-hours sold, for bundled service only. Typical bill is that utility’s residential revenue spread over its residential accounts and twelve months, not a quoted tariff. The median priced utility charges 13.84¢ per kWh.
A high price is not the same as a bad deal
This page ranks price alone. A utility can charge above the median and still be worth it if the power stays on — and plenty charge above the median while their customers sit in the dark longer than average too. Those are listed separately.
1,261 utilities with at least 1,000 residential customers are priced here. Retail power marketers are excluded: their average blends plans across states and is not a price any single household pays.
